Overhaul

Twelve moves that change the picture.

Not hacks. A sequence: see everything, stop the leaks, fund a buffer, then raise income. Do them in order if the month currently feels loud.

  1. 01

    Write the full picture once

List every account, debt, income stream, and regular bill on a single page. Mystery is expensive. Clarity is the overhaul.

  2. 02

    Track thirty days without judgement

Do not change anything for a month. Record what actually leaves. You cannot overhaul a story you have not measured.

  3. 03

Separate needs, wants, and future you

Every outgoing belongs in one of three buckets. If it sits in two, it is a want wearing a need’s coat.

  4. 04

    Kill the silent subscriptions

Open a year’s worth of statements and highlight every recurring name. Cancel, downgrade, or defend each one out loud.

  5. 05

    Fund one month of essentials

A single month of rent, food, and bills in a separate account stops most emergencies from becoming high-interest debt.

  6. 06

    Automate the first movement

On payday, money should split itself: bills, savings, spending. What remains in the spending account is what you may spend.

  7. 07

    Attack the dearest debt

Minimums on everything, extras on the highest APR. When that one dies, roll the same payment onto the next. Avalanche, not vibes.

  8. 08

    Renegotiate the big three

Housing, transport, and insurance dwarf coffee. A cheaper excess, a shared commute, or a reviewed policy moves the needle.

  9. 09

    Raise income on a calendar

Book a date to ask for a review, list a skill on a freelance platform, or sell three unused items. Overhaul is not only austerity.

  10. 10

    Name sinking funds

Car service, Christmas, annual insurance, new glasses. Irregular is not unexpected. Give those costs a monthly line now.

  11. 11

    Review monthly, not hourly

A 20-minute sitting at month-end beats daily anxiety. Compare the plan to the bank, adjust one line, leave the rest alone.

  12. 12

    Protect the surplus

When income rises, freeze lifestyle for six months and send the difference to savings or debt. Lifestyle creep is the quiet tax on raises.
